In Memoriam: Dr. Roger Worthington
With heavy hearts, members of the SDG Publishers Compact Fellows Action Group note the passing of our co-chair, Dr. Roger Worthington, who died in hospital after a brief illness on October 16, 2024. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Roger is remembered with admiration and affection by us all. News of his passing moved members in many parts of the world to respond by expressing their deep appreciation for his kind advice, encouragement, and friendship. He was a longstanding member of the Group, often giving a warm welcome to those who joined later. He voluntarily engaged with nearly every aspect of our work, collaborating most visibly to support the Group’s conference presentations, newsletters, and Top Action Tips. He was also an inspiration. As one member remarked, Roger was a ray of light around trying to solve the world’s problems. He had the rare ability to connect the dots to try and move the culture change needed to make progress.
Roger, a former adjunct faculty member at Yale School of Medicine in the USA, joined the SDG Publishers Compact Fellows in 2021, after also holding academic positions in medical schools in the United Kingdom and Australia. He was a consultant in ethics, global health and sustainable development. He published widely and was a regular speaker at United Nations conferences. He ran numerous professional development courses for the UK’s National Health Service and will be remembered by many as a mentor for young scholars from around the world. His recent work supporting climate refugees was groundbreaking.
Truly, the world is a better place because of Roger’s many contributions. He will be greatly missed by the SDG Publishers Compact Fellows as well as by all who knew him.
